TRAINING & PROGRAMMES

Vocational Rehabilitation

Karachi Vocational Training Centre is the 1st Vocational training center with a unique Job Placement Program in Pakistan for the intellectually challenged. Over 500 intellectually challenged (IC) persons have been rehabilitated by KVTC and are engaged in paying jobs all over Karachi.

What We do?

As intellectual disabilities are not illnesses, there are no treatments per se. Instead, interventions focus on identifying abilities and limitations. The goal is to provide sufficient supports that maximize each person’s functioning. KVTC is the only centre in Sindh that offers a holistic solution to all rehabilitation needs of intellectually challenged persons and involves the 3 stages of rehabilitation:

  • Exploration
  • Understanding.
  • Action

KVTC is the only SEN training centre in Sindh with a comprehensive Sports & PE Curriculum:

  • 1st Special Educational Needs (SEN) training centre in Karachi to win over 1000 Special Olympics medals.
  • 1st SEN training centre to consecutively win over 1327 medals and 7 consecutive Taekwondo championships.
  • Partnered with the British Council and UK Sports Board to develop and implement Pakistan’s 1st Inclusive Sports & Physical Education Curriculum.
  • Capacity building of over 44 SEN Institutes in Karachi.

Therapeutic Units

The common characteristics of intellectual disabilities are: difficulty in learning and processing information; problems with abstract thought; and problems with social interactions occur at varying levels unique to each individual. Intellectual impairment involves problems with mental abilities that affect day-to-day functioning in three areas:

  • Conceptual – includes problems with skill in language, reading, writing, mathematics, reasoning, memory, knowledge retention.
  • Social – refers to issues with empathy, judgment, communication, making and keeping friends, and other social functions.
  • Practical – focuses on problems with self-care, like personal hygiene, job duties, personal finance & organization.

For KVTC it’s critical that parents who suspect their child may have an intellectual impairment seek counseling and help from their qualified mental health and medical professionals. For them we create a therapeutic unit whose services are given below:[gdlr_space height=”20px”][gdlr_space height=”20px”]

TEXTILE SKILLS

The general work place in Pakistan still has a long way to go in terms of being accessible to people with physical disabilities, whereby most employers are reluctant to hire intellectually challenged people because they perceive them to have limited or insufficient capabilities to perform jobs. This lack of awareness results in even stronger barriers for intellectually challenged people who are almost never considered for employment. While KVTC has had unprecedented success in this area, we feel that we can find employment for more intellectually challenged people through the set up of small-medium enterprises, based on the skills they learn at the centre, and the manufacture and sale of items produced and marketed by intellectually challenged people themselves.

The trainee came to KVTC from a stressful environment after his father’s death. With all the support gone, he started as a trainee at KVTC with therapies and training to resolve his problems. He stayed at home until the time he came to KVTC. The trainee was provided with constant Home Support and was enrolled in British Council for completion of his education. With minimum odds of surviving, he completed his O and A levels and is now working as an Assistant Accounts Officer in Quality Textile Mills.
